English meaning
The one possessor of the net rules all worlds through ruling powers and is alone at their arising and manifestation. Those who know this become immortal.
Context
The chapter presents the divine of the yoga passage as the single ruler of all worlds.
Explanation
The net images the world’s complex manifestation or the power that projects it. Repetition of “through ruling powers” places multiplicity of powers alongside the ruler’s unity.
Passage 3.2
English meaning
Rudra is one; there is no place for a second. Through his ruling powers he governs these worlds and stands inwardly in beings. Having brought forth all the worlds, their guardian gathers them in at the end.
Context
The single ruler is explicitly identified here by the name Rudra.
Explanation
Rudra is not only destructive: creation, protection, inward presence and final withdrawal are all included. “No second” emphasizes ultimate sovereignty without by itself settling every later philosophical debate.
English meaning
With eyes, faces, arms and feet on every side, the one god brings heaven and earth into being, moving all together with arms and wings.
Context
Rudra’s omnipresence is portrayed through a Vedic image of a body facing every direction.
Explanation
Limbs in every direction need not measure a gigantic biological body; they portray the ground of perception and action everywhere. Wings add a further image of cosmic movement.
Passage 3.4
English meaning
May Rudra, source and origin of the gods, ruler of the universe and great seer, who brought forth Hiraṇyagarbha in the beginning, unite us with auspicious understanding.
Context
The cosmic description becomes a prayer for understanding.
Explanation
Hiraṇyagarbha names the first living or cosmic emergence in Vedic thought. The requested gift is wholesome understanding rather than merely outward power or wealth.
Passage 3.5
English meaning
Rudra, with your auspicious, non-terrifying form that reveals no evil, with that most peaceful body, O Giriśanta, look upon us and shine toward us.
Context
The all-powerful Rudra is asked to manifest his peaceful and benevolent form.
Explanation
Śivā here grammatically qualifies the body as auspicious. Rather than denying the fear inspired by overwhelming power, the prayer asks that power to appear compassionately.
Passage 3.6
English meaning
Giriśanta, the arrow you hold in your hand to discharge, make it beneficent, O Giritra. Do not harm the person or the moving world.
Context
The request for a peaceful form becomes a prayer to turn Rudra’s arrow away from harm.
Explanation
The arrow retains the protective prayer-language of Vedic hymns to Rudra. Puruṣam jagat allows connected or separate construals; this rendering makes the protection of persons and the moving world explicit.
English meaning
Beyond that is the supreme, vast Brahman, hidden in all beings according to each embodied arrangement. Knowing that Lord, the one who encompasses the universe, people become immortal.
Context
The prayer to Rudra gives way again to an account of Brahman and inward presence.
Explanation
Yathānikāyam can mean within each collection or organized embodiment. Hiddenness is not absence: the single encompassing reality is not immediately evident in its many embodiments.
English meaning
I know that great Puruṣa, radiant like the sun and beyond darkness. By knowing him alone one crosses beyond death; no other path is found for that destination.
Context
The Upanishad moves into a first-person declaration of realization.
Explanation
Solar radiance is an image of illumination. The assertion that there is no other path centers knowledge of this Puruṣa; it should not be detached from that context to justify hostility toward other groups.
Passage 3.9
English meaning
Beyond whom there is nothing further, than whom nothing is smaller or greater, that One stands in the luminous expanse like an unmoving tree. By that Puruṣa this entire world is filled.
Context
The Puruṣa’s radiance is followed by incomparable scope and stability.
Explanation
The opposed scales of smaller and greater reject finite measurement. The stable-tree image belongs with omnipresence, not with a figure confined to one point in the sky.
English meaning
What is still beyond is formless and free of affliction. Those who know this become immortal; the others enter into suffering.
Context
After the concrete image of a stable tree, the text introduces the corrective of formlessness.
Explanation
“Further beyond” fits the transcendence of forms better than a physical distance. The contrast concerns knowledge and ignorance, not a social rule for blaming people who suffer.
Passage 3.11
English meaning
Possessing every face, head and neck, dwelling in the inner cave of every being, that blessed Lord pervades all; thus the auspicious one, Śiva, is present everywhere.
Context
Formlessness is placed alongside presence in all embodied beings.
Explanation
Cosmic limbs and the heart’s cave offer complementary perspectives: universality and intimacy. Śiva carries both the sense “auspicious” and its role as a divine name.
English meaning
The Puruṣa is indeed the great Lord, the one who sets sattva into activity. He governs this utterly pure attainment and is imperishable light.
Context
The all-pervading Puruṣa is connected with clarity and the fruition of realization.
Explanation
Sattva can signify being, the inner faculty or luminous quality. The compressed second half is read as the Lord’s governance of pure attainment, not as a list of additional material rewards.
Passage 3.13
English meaning
The inward Self, the Puruṣa described as thumb-sized, is always present in the human heart. He is discerned through heart, insight and mind; those who know this become immortal.
Context
The cosmic form becomes the inward Puruṣa encountered close at hand in the heart.
Explanation
Thumb-size provides a concentrated contemplative image; restricting the all-pervading Self to a bodily measurement conflicts with nearby verses. Alongside heart, manīṣā keeps discerning intelligence in view.
Passage 3.14
English meaning
The Puruṣa has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes and a thousand feet. Encompassing the earth on every side, he extends beyond it by ten finger-breadths.
Context
The inward Puruṣa is expanded again through the cosmic imagery of the Puruṣa hymn.
Explanation
A thousand poetically suggests abundance and comprehensiveness. The extension by ten finger-breadths marks a reality that pervades the visible world without being exhausted by it.
Passage 3.15
English meaning
The Puruṣa alone is all this, what has been and what will be. He is also lord of immortality and of that which grows and emerges through food.
Context
The cosmic form is extended across time and the conditions of food-dependent life.
Explanation
Food supports bodily growth and the perishing world. Placing food-dependent increase beside immortality brings enduring and changing existence within one encompassing vision.
English meaning
Its hands and feet are everywhere, its eyes, heads and faces everywhere, and its hearing everywhere. It stands encompassing everything in the world.
Context
Repetition of “everywhere” makes the universality of the thousand-limbed imagery explicit.
Explanation
The image points to the pervasive basis of seeing, moving and hearing in living beings. The neuter “that” connects the language of Puruṣa with a less personified way of speaking about reality.
English meaning
It shines through the functions of every sense, yet is without all sense-organs. It is the lord and ruler of all, the refuge and friend of all.
Context
Presence in every sensory function is immediately paired with transcendence of sense-organs.
Explanation
Supporting sensory activity does not mean dependence on a particular sensory instrument. “Friend” balances the language of rule: ultimate reality is not portrayed merely as a distant controller.
Passage 3.18
English meaning
In the city of nine gates, the embodied swan moves playfully outward. He is master of the entire world, of what stands still and what moves.
Context
From cosmic sensory activity, the text turns to the presence within the body as a city.
Explanation
The nine gates are commonly read as bodily openings. Combining embodiment with mastery of the whole world raises the relation of individual and supreme self, which interpretive traditions resolve differently.
Passage 3.19
English meaning
Without hands or feet he moves swiftly and grasps; without eyes he sees, without ears he hears. He knows what is knowable, yet there is no knower who comprehends him as an object. He is called the foremost, great Puruṣa.
Context
The sense-free ground is developed through explicit paradoxes of action and knowledge.
Explanation
Incomprehensibility cannot mean total inaccessibility, since the text repeatedly urges knowing him. The limit concerns treating the universal knower as an ordinary object for another observer.
English meaning
Smaller than the small and greater than the great, the Self is hidden in this creature’s inner cave. Free of desire-driven resolve and sorrow, one sees the majestic Lord through the favor of the Sustainer.
Context
The inward Self and greatness beyond measurement meet again in one mantra.
Explanation
The base’s wording supports “through the Sustainer’s favor.” Other witnesses read dhātuprasādāt, which can be understood as clarity of the constituent faculties or elements; the distinction materially affects interpretation.
Passage 3.21
English meaning
I know this ageless, ancient one, the Self of all, present everywhere through his pervasiveness. Those who speak of Brahman declare the ending of birth in relation to him and proclaim him eternal.
Context
The chapter closes by renewing the “I know” declaration with agelessness, universal selfhood and freedom from birth.
Explanation
The ending of birth may refer to release from rebirth or to the unborn character of ultimate reality. The compressed syntax of the second half leaves their relationship open.
Context
The chapter presents the divine of the yoga passage as the single ruler of all worlds.
