English meaning
May the one god, himself without color yet bearing many colors and forms through the operation of power, with purposes hidden within, who unfolds and withdraws the universe at beginning and end, unite us with auspicious understanding.
Context
Chapter four opens the relation between the formless One and many forms through power.
Explanation
Varṇa here concerns color or appearance, not social class. The syntax linking vicaiti with beginning and end is compressed; the rendering conveys both manifestation and withdrawal.
Passage 4.2
English meaning
That alone is fire, the sun, wind and the moon. That is the radiant principle, Brahman, the waters and Prajāpati.
Context
The many forms are now specified through Vedic deities and cosmic elements.
Explanation
Repeated “that” emphasizes one ground behind different names. Śukram can suggest brightness, pure radiance or generative potency; it is not treated here as necessarily the planet Venus.
Passage 4.3
English meaning
You are woman and man; you are boy and girl. Grown old, you move with a staff; being born, you appear with faces in every direction.
Context
The vision of unity moves from cosmic elements into everyday human life.
Explanation
Different genders and ages are presented as forms of one pervasive reality. The elder’s staff includes human vulnerability within that vision, not only strength and youth.
English meaning
You are the blue winged creature, the green and red-eyed form, the lightning-bearing cloud, the seasons and the oceans. Beginningless, you exist through your all-pervading power; from you all worlds have arisen.
Context
Human diversity is followed by colors, creatures, weather and oceans.
Explanation
Pataṅga may mean a bird or another winged creature; the green and red-eyed descriptions can be joined or read separately. The central movement is toward one beginningless source throughout nature’s variety.
English meaning
One unborn female principle, red, white and black, brings forth many offspring like herself. One unborn male lies beside her, enjoying her; another unborn one leaves her after the experience has been exhausted.
Context
The relation of one and many is recast as a cryptic image of a three-colored unborn female and two unborn males.
Explanation
Traditions relate the colors to qualities or to fire, water and food. Ajā also permits a poetic play between “unborn” and “she-goat”; the image points toward nature, the attached experiencer and release without naming every identification explicitly.
English meaning
Two fair-winged birds, joined companions and friends, embrace the same tree. One eats its sweet fruit; the other watches without eating.
Context
The unborn-principle image is followed by two birds distinguishing experience from witnessing.
Explanation
The tree is their shared support. Eating and simply seeing distinguish involvement in experience from witnessing; the following verse connects that distinction with sorrow and its ending.
English meaning
Immersed in the same tree, the person grieves in helplessness and bewilderment. When he sees the other, the revered Lord, and that Lord’s greatness, he becomes free from sorrow.
Context
The existential force of the two-bird image is made explicit.
Explanation
The problem is not merely that the fruit tastes bitter, but the helpless, confused absorption in experience. The change comes through seeing the other’s greatness, not through destroying the world or the other bird.
Passage 4.8
English meaning
The hymns rest in the imperishable highest expanse where all the gods are established. What will one who does not know that accomplish with a hymn? Those who know it find their abiding there.
Context
Seeing the Lord becomes a call to know the deeper ground of the Vedic hymn.
Explanation
The hymn is not simply rejected; the verse asks how its words relate to their imperishable ground. The highest expanse is not a physical star map but an image of the basis of gods and sacred speech.
English meaning
Meters, sacrifices, rites, vows, past and future, and what the Vedas declare: the possessor of māyā brings forth this whole universe from that ground. Within it, the other self remains confined by māyā.
Context
The ritual order and time are included within the world produced through māyā.
Explanation
The possessor of māyā wields the power; the “other” is the experiencer constrained within its field. Māyā here is not merely a synonym for falsehood: creative power and the medium of limitation are both in view.
Passage 4.10
English meaning
Know māyā as prakṛti, nature, and the possessor of māyā as the great Lord. This entire world is pervaded by what are, as it were, his constituent manifestations.
Context
The preceding māyā and its possessor are explicitly identified.
Explanation
Collapsing nature and the great Lord into an undifferentiated label loses the verse’s structure. The language of constituent manifestations need not make the Lord a heap of physical pieces, especially given the later description “without parts.”
Passage 4.11
English meaning
Recognizing the one who presides over every source of birth, in whom all this joins together and disperses, the Lord who grants gifts and deserves praise, one reaches complete peace.
Context
The relation of nature and its ruler is extended to every center of arising and dissolution.
Explanation
The repeated “every source” does not privilege a single birthplace. Peace is connected with recognizing one presiding reality behind the plurality of origins.
Passage 4.12
English meaning
May Rudra, origin and source of the gods, ruler of the universe and great seer, who beheld Hiraṇyagarbha being born, unite us with auspicious understanding.
Context
The prayer from chapter three returns, but the verb concerning Hiraṇyagarbha changes.
Explanation
In 3.4 the action was bringing forth; here it is beholding birth. Preserving that difference matters: the two mantras should not be flattened into an identical translation.
Passage 4.13
English meaning
To the ruler of the gods, on whom the worlds depend, who governs the two-footed and four-footed beings of this world, let us offer oblation. To what other god would we offer it?
Context
The prayer for understanding takes up the interrogative voice of Vedic offering.
Explanation
Two-footed and four-footed beings place human and animal life together. “To which god?” gives the identification of the worthy recipient an open or rhetorical form, not merely an expression of confusion.
Passage 4.14
English meaning
Within the tangled world is the exceedingly subtle creator, appearing in many forms, the one who encompasses the universe. Knowing that auspicious one, one attains complete peace.
Context
From the question of offering, the text returns to recognizing the subtle indwelling reality.
Explanation
Kalila evokes entanglement or a densely mixed condition. The subtle reality is to be recognized within that complexity, not merely by imagining an escape to a location outside the world.
Passage 4.15
English meaning
He alone guards the world through time, rules the universe and is hidden in all beings. Knowing him in whom seers of Brahman and gods are united, one cuts the bonds of death.
Context
The subtle creator is related to protection, the seers’ practice and freedom from death.
Explanation
“In time” need not mean generated by time; it concerns the divine’s protective role within temporal existence. Cutting death’s bonds is the text’s language of liberation, not an empirical test of bodily indestructibility.
English meaning
Knowing Śiva, hidden in all beings and subtler than the finest essence of clarified butter, knowing the one divine who encompasses the world, one is released from every bond.
Context
Subtlety receives an analogy related to the butter imagery of chapter one.
Explanation
Maṇḍa can mean a refined essence or fine upper portion. The comparison does not make the Self a food substance; it evokes recognition of a subtle essence within gross appearance.
Passage 4.17
English meaning
This divine maker of the world, the great Self, is always present in people’s hearts. He is discerned through heart, insight and mind; those who know this become immortal.
Context
The inward-presence wording of 3.13 returns, now naming the divine as the maker of the world.
Explanation
Replacing the thumb-sized image with “world-maker” links inward intimacy with cosmic creativity. The indwelling reality is not reduced to a merely private feeling.
Passage 4.18
English meaning
When darkness is absent, there is neither day nor night, neither being nor non-being; the auspicious One alone remains. That is the imperishable, that is Savitar’s most worthy reality, and from it ancient wisdom has issued.
Context
The reality discerned in the heart is now described beyond ordinary oppositions.
Explanation
The base yadā’tamaḥ is read as a condition without darkness, not simply primordial darkness. The denial of being and non-being marks the limits of dual categories rather than a casual declaration that nothing matters.
Passage 4.19
English meaning
No one grasps him above, across or in the middle. There is no equal likeness or measure of the one whose glory is great.
Context
Transcendence of oppositions is followed by the failure of location and comparison to contain the divine.
Explanation
Pratimā may mean a counterpart, likeness or comparable measure. Turning this single statement into a universal social prohibition on every religious image would add a further interpretive claim.
Passage 4.20
English meaning
His form does not stand before one as a visible object; no one sees him with the eye. Those who know him in this way, present in the heart and discerned through heart and mind, become immortal.
Context
After limits of likeness and location, the text distinguishes visual observation from inward knowing.
Explanation
Not being visible does not make knowledge impossible. Heart and mind indicate a mode of understanding distinct from observing an ordinary object; no particular visual experience is required.
English meaning
A frightened seeker takes refuge, addressing the divine as unborn: Rudra, with your gracious face, protect me always.
Context
After subtle metaphysical reflection, the text returns to direct human fear and refuge.
Explanation
Dakṣiṇam here suggests gracious or favorable. Prayer following philosophical negation shows that insight and affective trust are not treated as opposites in this text.
Passage 4.22
English meaning
Rudra, do not harm our little children, offspring, lifespan, cattle or horses. In anger do not strike down our strong ones. Bearing offerings, we continually call upon you.
Context
Chapter four ends with a Vedic prayer for the safety of family and livelihood.
Explanation
Cattle and horses belong to the economic and social security of the ancient setting. Placing everyday protection beside ultimate peace reveals the range of religious concerns held together by the text.
Context
Chapter four opens the relation between the formless One and many forms through power.
