तत्कर्म कृत्वा विनिवर्त्य भूयस्तत्त्वस्य तत्त्वेन समेत्य योगम् । एकेन द्वाभ्यां त्रिभिरष्टभिर्वा कालेन चैवात्मगुणैश्च सूक्ष्मैः ॥ ३ ॥

English meaning
Having brought that work into being and drawn it back again, there is a joining of one principle with another: through one, two, three, or eight, and also through time and the subtle qualities associated with the self.
व्याख्या
एक, दो, तीन और आठ किसकी गणना हैं, यह मन्त्र स्वयं नहीं खोलता। इन्हें अविद्या, कर्म के द्वन्द्व, तीन गुण और आठ प्रकृतियों से जोड़ने वाली व्याख्या है, पर वही एकमात्र सम्भव सूची नहीं। विनिवर्त्य का समेटना या निरीक्षण करके लौटना तथा कर्ता का सम्बन्ध भी व्याख्या माँगते हैं।
Explanation
The verse does not itself identify the sets of one, two, three, and eight. One interpretation connects them with ignorance, a pair of karmic alternatives, the three qualities, and eight forms of nature, but that is not the only possible scheme. The force of vinivartya and the implied agent also require interpretation.
