English meaning
Within the imperishable, infinite, supreme Brahman lie two hidden principles: knowledge and ignorance. Ignorance belongs to what passes away, while knowledge is deathless; the one who governs both knowledge and ignorance is distinct from them.
Explanation
Akṣare is locative here: it describes the imperishable in which the two are situated. It does not make ignorance and knowledge equally imperishable. Deathless knowledge points toward liberating understanding rather than the mere accumulation of information.
Context
Chapter five opens by distinguishing knowledge, ignorance, and the reality that presides over both.
