English meaning
May that lord who is foremost among the sacred metres, whose forms are manifold, and who arose from the immortal metres, fill me with understanding. O divine one, may I become able to hold the immortal. May my body be capable, my tongue exceedingly sweet, and may I hear abundantly with both ears. You are the sheath of Brahman, covered by ordinary understanding. Guard what I have heard.
Explanation
Traditional exposition identifies the foremost element of the metres with Om. Medha is the capacity to understand and retain what is heard. Calling the symbol a sheath of Brahman distinguishes the outward vehicle from what it reveals: familiarity with the symbol can coexist with ignorance of its deeper significance.
Context
The fourth anuvaka joins prayers for understanding with prayers for the teaching household’s resources. This opening section concentrates on hearing, retention, and fit speech.
