वेदमनूच्याचार्योऽन्तेवासिनमनुशास्ति । सत्यं वद । धर्मं चर । स्वाध्यायान्मा प्रमदः । आचार्याय प्रियं धनमाहृत्य प्रजातन्तुं मा व्यवच्छेत्सीः । सत्यान्न प्रमदितव्यम्। धर्मान्न प्रमदितव्यम् । कुशलान्न प्रमदितव्यम् । भूत्यै न प्रमदितव्यम् । स्वाध्यायप्रवचनाभ्यां न प्रमदितव्यम् । देवपितृकार्याभ्यां न प्रमदितव्यम् ॥ १ ॥

वेद पढ़ा चुकने पर आचार्य अन्तेवासी शिष्य को उपदेश देता है: सत्य बोलो; धर्म का आचरण करो; स्वाध्याय में प्रमाद मत करो। आचार्य के लिए प्रिय धन लाकर संतान की परम्परा मत तोड़ो। सत्य की उपेक्षा न हो; धर्म की उपेक्षा न हो; कुशल की उपेक्षा न हो; समृद्धि की उपेक्षा न हो; स्वाध्याय और प्रवचन की उपेक्षा न हो; देवताओं और पितरों के प्रति कर्तव्यों की उपेक्षा न हो।
English meaning
Having taught the Veda, the teacher instructs the resident student: speak truth; practice dharma; do not neglect personal study. Having brought the teacher a valued gift, do not break the continuity of offspring. Truth must not be neglected; dharma must not be neglected; well-being must not be neglected; prosperity must not be neglected; study and teaching must not be neglected; duties toward the gods and ancestors must not be neglected.
व्याख्या
पाठ पढ़ाई समाप्त होने को सीखने की समाप्ति नहीं मानता। बार-बार प्रमाद से बचने का कथन अच्छे इरादे और नियमित आचरण के बीच का अन्तर रेखांकित करता है। गुरु-दक्षिणा, वंश-विस्तार और देव-पितृ-कर्म इसके वैदिक गृहस्थ परिवेश के अंग हैं; उन्हें आज हर व्यक्ति के लिए सामाजिक दबाव या बाध्यता नहीं माना गया है।
Explanation
Completion of formal instruction is not completion of learning. The repeated warning against neglect emphasizes the gap between good intentions and sustained practice. The teacher’s gift, continuation of lineage, and rites for gods and ancestors belong to the Vedic household setting; their historical presentation is not a present-day demand that everyone follow that life pattern.
