English meaning
Om. May Mitra be gracious to us, and Varuna gracious; may Aryaman be gracious to us. May Indra and Brihaspati be gracious to us; may Vishnu of the wide strides be gracious to us. Homage to Brahman. Homage to you, Wind. You alone are Brahman directly present. I shall declare you to be Brahman directly present. I shall speak what accords with order; I shall speak truth. May that protect me; may it protect the speaker. May it protect me; may it protect the speaker. Om, peace, peace, peace.
Explanation
The prayer protects both learner and speaker while binding speech to truth and an ordered way of living. Addressing the wind as directly present Brahman uses an immediately experienced sustaining power as a contemplative approach. The several divine names belong to the text’s Vedic liturgical setting, not to a list of separate definitions of Brahman.
