English meaning
Bhuh, Bhuvah, and Suvah are the three sacred utterances. Mahachamasya made known a fourth among them: Mahah. That is Brahman; that is the self or central whole, while the other deities are its limbs. Bhuh is this world; Bhuvah the intermediate region; Suvah the world above.
Explanation
A vyahriti is a sacred utterance, not merely a geographical label. The image of self and limbs makes Mahah an integrating centre. The point of the exercise is to see a relational whole rather than to memorize four unrelated cosmic places.
Context
The fifth anuvaka adds Mahah to the three familiar utterances and develops a fourfold contemplation. Its first correspondence concerns the worlds.
