अथ कबन्धी कात्यायन उपेत्य पप्रच्छ । भगवन् कुतो ह वा इमाः प्रजाः प्रजायन्त इति ॥ ३ ॥

तब कबन्धी कात्यायन पास आकर पूछने लगे: “भगवन्, ये प्रजाएँ किससे उत्पन्न होती हैं?”
English meaning
Then Kabandhi Katyayana approached and asked: “Venerable sir, from what are these living beings born?”
व्याख्या
प्रजा का अर्थ यहाँ केवल मानव संतान तक सीमित नहीं है; प्रश्न जीवन की उत्पत्ति और प्रजनन के व्यापक आधार को पूछता है। आगे का उत्तर आधुनिक जैविक विवरण नहीं, प्रजापति, सूर्य-चन्द्र, काल और अन्न को जोड़ने वाला वैदिक सृष्टि-विचार है।
