English meaning
Day and night together are Prajapati: day is prana, and night is rayi. The text declares that those who engage in sexual union by day dissipate prana, while union by night is, within this discipline, counted as brahmacharya.
Explanation
This is an ancient religious discipline, not a modern medical conclusion about the timing of sex. A contradiction arises if brahmacharya is allowed only the meaning of total abstinence: the passage extends the term approvingly to regulated household conduct. The commentary adds marital and fertile-period qualifications that the mantra itself does not state explicitly.
Context
The smaller unit of day and night is connected with a teaching about sexual restraint in household life.
