English meaning
Om. Sukesha Bharadvaja, Shaibya Satyakama, Sauryayani Gargya, Kausalya Ashvalayana, Bhargava Vaidarbhi, and Kabandhi Katyayana were all devoted to Brahman, established in its pursuit, and seeking the highest Brahman. Thinking, “This venerable teacher will surely explain all of that to us,” they approached the revered Pippalada carrying sacrificial firewood in their hands.
Context
The introduction of six seekers and their teacher establishes the setting for the Upanishad’s six questions.
Explanation
Carrying firewood signals readiness for study and service in the ancient teacher–student setting. The seekers already possess religious commitment, yet still seek the highest understanding; commitment and completed realization are not simply equated. The honorific bhagavantam expresses reverence for the teacher.
Passage 1.2
English meaning
The sage said to them: “Live here for one further year with discipline, brahmacharya, and trust. Then ask whatever questions you wish. If we know the answers, we shall explain everything to you.”
Context
Rather than answering immediately, Pippalada sets a period of preparation for study.
Explanation
Discipline, brahmacharya, and trust combine sustained effort, restraint in student life, and serious confidence in the teaching. “If we know” keeps the teacher’s answer modest rather than presenting a claim of infallibility. After the preparation, the students are free to choose their own questions.
Passage 1.3
English meaning
Then Kabandhi Katyayana approached and asked: “Venerable sir, from what are these living beings born?”
Context
After the period of preparation, the first question concerns the origin of living beings.
Explanation
Praja is not restricted here to one person’s children; the question asks about the wider source of living beings and generation. The answer will connect Prajapati, sun and moon, time, and nourishment in a Vedic account of creation, rather than offer a modern biological explanation.
Passage 1.4
English meaning
He answered: “Prajapati desired living offspring and undertook tapas. Having practiced this creative discipline, he brought forth a pair, rayi and prana, thinking, ‘These two will produce many kinds of living beings for me.’”
Context
Pippalada begins the account of creation with an originating pair.
Explanation
Rayi and prana will be associated respectively with the material or nourishing side of existence and its active life-principle. They should not be treated as exact ancient equivalents of modern matter and energy. Prajapati’s tapas represents concentrated creative preparation before generation.
Passage 1.5
English meaning
The sun is indeed prana, and the moon is rayi. All this is rayi, both what has form and what is without form. Thus embodied form is certainly rayi.
Context
The originating pair is now identified through the symbols of sun and moon.
Explanation
Rayi first receives a broad scope: both subtle and tangible things can be objects of nourishment or consumption. Form is then singled out as rayi in a narrower sense. The distinction is therefore not a rigid division into two independent substances, but a contrast of roles within Prajapati’s one world.
English meaning
When the rising sun enters the eastern direction, it gathers the lives in the east into its rays. As it illuminates the south, west, north, below, above, and the intervening directions, indeed everything, it gathers all living powers into its rays.
Context
The identification of the sun with prana is unfolded through its illumination of every direction.
Explanation
The gathering of lives into rays belongs to contemplative imagery: the many living beings brought into the light are related to one encompassing life-principle. The exhaustive list of directions makes that relationship universal rather than local. It is not a claim that persons are physically stored in sunlight.
Passage 1.7
English meaning
This very one rises as Vaishvanara, possessing every form, as prana and fire. The following Vedic verse has been spoken about it.
Context
The prose discussion introduces an ancient verse praising the sun.
Explanation
Vaishvanara names fire in its relation to all people or beings. Together with “having every form,” it points beyond a flame confined to one place. Joining sun, fire, and prana establishes a unity for contemplation.
English meaning
He has every form, is radiant with rays, is Jatavedas, the ultimate refuge, the single light, and shines with heat. With a thousand rays and present in a hundred ways, this sun rises as the life of living beings.
Context
The quoted verse praises both the sun’s many manifestations and its life-sustaining unity.
Explanation
The thousand rays and hundred modes express poetic abundance rather than a measured count. Jatavedas is a Vedic epithet of fire, commonly understood as the knower of births or of what has arisen. One light and many forms are not opposed here: the hymn finds a common ground in multiplicity.
Passage 1.9
English meaning
The year is Prajapati. It has two courses, southern and northern. Those who revere sacrificial observances and beneficent works as their accomplished good attain the lunar world; they return again. Thus those seers who desire offspring take the southern course. This path of the ancestors is rayi.
Context
The discussion moves from sun and moon to the yearly cycle and two traditionally envisaged paths after death.
Explanation
Ishtapurta includes both sacrificial observance and works of public benefit. Such acts are not dismissed, but their results are placed within a cycle that includes return. The connection between the southern course and the ancestral path belongs to this religious cosmology, not to an independent rule for calculating destiny from a date of death.
English meaning
But those who seek the self through discipline, brahmacharya, trust, and knowledge attain the sun by the northern course. This is the abode of living powers, the deathless, the fearless, and the highest destination. From it they do not return. This is the barrier or boundary. On this point there is the following verse.
Context
After the southern course, the text presents the northern course associated with knowledge of the self.
Explanation
The contrast concerns not only a celestial direction but the character of practice: inquiry into the self and knowledge are decisive here. The compressed term nirodha is difficult; Shankara’s commentary takes it as the barrier preventing the unknowing from passing beyond the solar boundary. Deathlessness and fearlessness are terms of the text’s account of spiritual attainment.
Passage 1.11
English meaning
Some describe him as the father with five feet and twelve forms, rich in waters in the upper region of heaven. Others describe the discerning one as set upon a seven-wheeled, six-spoked support.
Context
A symbolic verse portrays the sun as the year and the cycle of seasons.
Explanation
The five feet are traditionally connected with five seasons, combining the two winter seasons, and the twelve forms with the months. Six spokes suggest the alternative reckoning of six seasons. Seven evokes Vedic imagery of the sun’s chariot or horses. The verse offers symbolic arrangements of time rather than one literal vehicle diagram.
Passage 1.12
English meaning
The month is Prajapati. Its dark fortnight is rayi, and its bright fortnight is prana. Therefore these seers perform their sacrificial observances in the bright fortnight; others do so in the other fortnight.
Context
The twofold pattern of the year is now shown within the waxing and waning halves of a month.
Explanation
The relationship found in the larger cycle recurs in a smaller one: the bright half is linked with prana and the dark half with rayi. Shankara’s commentary additionally stresses the practitioner’s vision of prana rather than calendar timing alone. The literal sentence remains a historical teaching about ritual observance.
Passage 1.13
English meaning
Day and night together are Prajapati: day is prana, and night is rayi. The text declares that those who engage in sexual union by day dissipate prana, while union by night is, within this discipline, counted as brahmacharya.
Context
The smaller unit of day and night is connected with a teaching about sexual restraint in household life.
Explanation
This is an ancient religious discipline, not a modern medical conclusion about the timing of sex. A contradiction arises if brahmacharya is allowed only the meaning of total abstinence: the passage extends the term approvingly to regulated household conduct. The commentary adds marital and fertile-period qualifications that the mantra itself does not state explicitly.
English meaning
Food is Prajapati. From it comes the reproductive seed, and from that these living beings are born.
Context
The account reaches nourishment and reproduction, completing its answer to Kabandhi’s original question.
Explanation
The sequence from sun and moon through year, month, day and night, and food connects the cosmos with the generation of life. Retas denotes reproductive seed, especially semen. This link between nourishment and generation belongs to an ancient account of the body, not a complete modern theory of nutrition or conception.
Passage 1.15
English meaning
Those who observe this discipline of Prajapati bring forth a pair of offspring. This world of Brahman belongs to those in whom discipline and brahmacharya are present and in whom truth is firmly established.
Context
The account of generation leads to the household discipline and its religious reward.
Explanation
The commentary understands the pair as a son and a daughter; this is not a warranted prediction of a child’s sex. Household life receives value through discipline, restraint, and truthfulness. Nor should the term brahmaloka automatically be assigned the same level of attainment here and in the next mantra: the commentary distinguishes them.
Passage 1.16
English meaning
That stainless world of Brahman belongs to those in whom there is no crookedness, no falsehood, and no deceit.
Context
The first question closes by emphasizing moral purity beyond outward observance.
Explanation
Jihma indicates crooked dealing, anrita falsehood, and maya a deceptive appearance presented to others. Reading maya here as the later Vedantic doctrine concerning the appearance of the entire world would change the immediate sense. The final teaching links an untainted destination with an untainted way of living.
Context
The introduction of six seekers and their teacher establishes the setting for the Upanishad’s six questions.
