English meaning
But those who seek the self through discipline, brahmacharya, trust, and knowledge attain the sun by the northern course. This is the abode of living powers, the deathless, the fearless, and the highest destination. From it they do not return. This is the barrier or boundary. On this point there is the following verse.
Explanation
The contrast concerns not only a celestial direction but the character of practice: inquiry into the self and knowledge are decisive here. The compressed term nirodha is difficult; Shankara’s commentary takes it as the barrier preventing the unknowing from passing beyond the solar boundary. Deathlessness and fearlessness are terms of the text’s account of spiritual attainment.
Context
After the southern course, the text presents the northern course associated with knowledge of the self.
