अथ हैनं भार्गवो वैदर्भिः पप्रच्छ । भगवन् कत्येव देवाः प्रजां विधारयन्ते कतर एतत् प्रकाशयन्ते कः पुनरेषां वरिष्ठ इति ॥ १ ॥

इसके बाद भार्गव वैदर्भि ने उनसे पूछा: “भगवन्, कितने देव इस जीव को धारण करते हैं? उनमें कौन इसे प्रकाशित करते हैं? और उनमें सबसे श्रेष्ठ कौन है?”
English meaning
Next Bhargava Vaidarbhi asked him: “Venerable sir, how many divine powers sustain this embodied being? Which of them illuminate it, and which is the foremost among them?”
व्याख्या
देव यहाँ केवल बाहरी देवताओं का नाम नहीं: अगले उत्तर में तत्त्व, इन्द्रियाँ और मन भी देव कहे जाते हैं। प्रश्न तीन स्तर अलग करता है, आधार देना, प्रकाश या अभिव्यक्ति देना, और प्रधान होना। प्राण की प्रधानता इसी तुलना से स्थापित होगी।
Explanation
Deva here does not name only external gods: the answer will include elements, faculties, and mind among these powers. The question distinguishes support, illumination or manifestation, and precedence. Prana’s primacy will be established through that comparison.
