मासो वै प्रजापतिस्तस्य कृष्णपक्ष एव रयिः शुक्लः प्राणस्तस्मादेत ऋषयः शुक्ल इष्टं कुर्वन्तीतर इतरस्मिन् ॥ १२ ॥

मास ही प्रजापति है। उसका कृष्णपक्ष रयि है और शुक्लपक्ष प्राण है। इसलिए ये ऋषि शुक्लपक्ष में इष्ट यज्ञ करते हैं; दूसरे लोग दूसरे पक्ष में करते हैं।
English meaning
The month is Prajapati. Its dark fortnight is rayi, and its bright fortnight is prana. Therefore these seers perform their sacrificial observances in the bright fortnight; others do so in the other fortnight.
व्याख्या
बड़े कालचक्र का वही सम्बन्ध छोटी इकाई में दोहरता है: प्रकाशमान पक्ष प्राण से और अन्धकारमय पक्ष रयि से जुड़ता है। शाङ्करभाष्य बाहरी तिथि से आगे साधक की प्राण-दृष्टि पर भी बल देता है। मूल वाक्य को अनुष्ठानकाल की ऐतिहासिक शिक्षा के रूप में पढ़ना चाहिए।
Explanation
The relationship found in the larger cycle recurs in a smaller one: the bright half is linked with prana and the dark half with rayi. Shankara’s commentary additionally stresses the practitioner’s vision of prana rather than calendar timing alone. The literal sentence remains a historical teaching about ritual observance.
