अथ हैनं कौसल्यश्चाश्वलायनः पप्रच्छ । भगवन् कुत एष प्राणो जायते कथमायात्यस्मिञ्शरीर आत्मानं वा प्रविभज्य कथं प्रातिष्ठते केनोत्क्रमते कथं बाह्यमभिधत्ते कथमध्यात्ममिति ॥ १ ॥

तब कौसल्य आश्वलायन ने उनसे पूछा: भगवन्, यह प्राण कहाँ से उत्पन्न होता है? इस शरीर में कैसे आता है? अपने को विभाजित करके कैसे स्थित होता है? किसके द्वारा बाहर निकलता है? बाहरी जगत् को कैसे धारण करता है और शरीर के भीतर कैसे कार्य करता है?
English meaning
Then Kausalya Ashvalayana asked him: Venerable sir, from where does this vital power arise? How does it enter this body? How does it establish itself after dividing its own activity? Through what does it depart? How does it sustain the external realm, and how does it function within the individual?
व्याख्या
प्राण को सर्वोच्च कार्यकारी शक्ति बताना अभी उसे अंतिम आत्मा मान लेना नहीं है। प्रश्न उसकी उत्पत्ति, प्रवेश, पाँच कार्यों, मृत्यु-समय प्रस्थान और बाहरी समकक्षों को एक व्यवस्थित खोज में जोड़ता है।
Explanation
Calling prana the leading operative power does not yet identify it with the ultimate Self. The question organizes an inquiry into its source, embodiment, differentiated functions, departure at death, and cosmic counterparts.
