English meaning
Then Sukesha Bharadvaja asked him: Venerable sir, Hiranyanabha, a prince of Kosala, came to me and asked, Bharadvaja, do you know the Person with sixteen parts? I told the prince that I did not know him. If I had known, why would I not have told him? Whoever speaks falsely withers away, root and all, so I ought not speak an untruth. He silently mounted his chariot and departed. I now ask you the same question: where is that Person?
Context
Before the final question, Sukesha recounts an admission of ignorance and commitment to truthfulness.
Explanation
Admitting ignorance before a prince becomes an ethical condition of philosophical learning. The image of withering root and all intensifies the destructiveness of falsehood; the story values an honest question over a performance of knowledge.
Passage 6.2
English meaning
He said to him: Dear one, here within this very body is that Person in whom these sixteen parts arise.
Context
The answer to where redirects the search from a distant location to the embodied field of experience.
Explanation
Within does not make the Person a small object imprisoned in flesh. The parts will extend across world and experience; embodiment is the point of access to knowledge, not the Self’s final geographical boundary.
Passage 6.3
English meaning
He considered: When what departs shall I have departed, and when what remains established shall I remain established?
Context
Before the emergence of the sixteen parts, the Person’s reflection is narrated.
Explanation
The reflection brings prana forward as a central condition of embodied life. The second question demonstrated its priority over the faculties; here the Person will become the source even of that vital power, completing the earlier line of inquiry.
Passage 6.4
English meaning
He brought forth prana. From prana came trust, space, air, fire, water, earth, the faculties, and mind; then food, from food strength, discipline, sacred formulas, action, worlds, and names within the worlds.
Context
The sixteen parts are enumerated in a sequence from vitality to names.
Explanation
The count is prana, trust, five elements, the faculties as one group, mind, food, strength, discipline, sacred formulas, action, worlds, and names. Counting the faculties collectively gives sixteen; the list joins bodily, mental, ethical, and social experience in one dependent order.
Passage 6.5
English meaning
As flowing rivers bound for the sea reach it and disappear, their names and forms dissolve and only the sea is spoken of, so these sixteen parts belonging to this all-seeing one, directed toward the Person, reach the Person and disappear. Their names and forms dissolve, and only the Person is spoken of. That one becomes partless and immortal. On this there is the following verse.
Context
After their emergence, the parts’ resolution into their ground is illustrated by rivers entering the sea.
Explanation
In the analogy, the loss of name and form is the ending of a river’s separate identity, not the destruction of the sea. Likewise, partless points not to a blank absence but to the Person no longer delimited by the parts; immortality is expressed beyond that limitation.
Passage 6.6
English meaning
Know that Person worthy of being known, in whom the parts are established like spokes in the hub of a chariot wheel, so that death may not afflict you.
Context
The final teaching verse calls for knowledge of the center supporting all the parts.
Explanation
The wheel image was used for prana in 2.6; now its hub is the Person supporting every part, prana included. Freedom from death’s affliction belongs to the liberating perspective of self-knowledge, not a promise that the physical body will never die.
English meaning
He told them: This is all that I know of this supreme Brahman; there is nothing higher than this.
Context
Pippalada closes his answers by denying a further object beyond the supreme subject.
Explanation
Reading this only as an admission of the teacher’s limitation would miss the next statement that nothing is higher. It declares the completeness of the teaching and ultimacy of its subject while retaining the form of the teacher’s personal assertion.
Passage 6.8
English meaning
Honoring him, they said: You are truly our father, for you carry us beyond ignorance to the farther shore. Homage to the supreme seers; homage to the supreme seers.
Context
The dialogue of six questions closes with gratitude to the teacher and the lineage of knowledge.
Explanation
Calling the teacher father honors one who gives a new life through knowledge. The image of crossing beyond ignorance gives the outcome of the inquiry begun in honesty; the repeated homage expresses both reverence and closure.
Context
Before the final question, Sukesha recounts an admission of ignorance and commitment to truthfulness.
