English meaning
Then Shaibya Satyakama asked him: Venerable sir, if a person meditates on Om until the end of life, what world does that person attain through it? He answered him.
Context
The fifth question concerns sustained meditation on Om and its result.
Explanation
Prayananta carries the practice through the end of life; it does not merely describe pronouncing a sound at the last instant. The answer will connect different dimensions of meditation with different results rather than offer a single undifferentiated destination.
Passage 5.2
English meaning
Satyakama, Om represents both the higher and the lower Brahman. Therefore a discerning person reaches either of them through this very support.
Context
The answer begins by making Om a support for approaching both higher and lower Brahman.
Explanation
A single symbol can function differently according to the meditator’s understanding and object of contemplation. Ayatana means a support or resting place; treating Om only as an uttered sound would overlook the role of knowledge and contemplative orientation.
Passage 5.3
English meaning
If one meditates on Om in its one-measure aspect, awakened by that very meditation one soon comes to embodiment on earth. The Rig verses lead that person to the human world, where, endowed with discipline, brahmacharya, and trust, one experiences greatness.
Context
Meditation on the first measure is related to earth and human embodiment.
Explanation
Partial contemplation is not dismissed as worthless: its fruit is a human life favorable to practice and the cultivation of spiritual qualities. It nevertheless remains within a sphere of return, not the final realization of the imperishable.
Passage 5.4
English meaning
If one becomes absorbed in mind through Om in its two-measure aspect, the Yajur formulas raise that person to the intermediate region, the world of Soma. After experiencing that world’s splendor, the person returns.
Context
The second case links two measures with Soma’s lunar realm.
Explanation
Being raised indicates an elevated attainment, but returning marks its limit. The crucial distinction is between a superior condition of enjoyment and going beyond birth and death, not merely choosing a better heaven.
Passage 5.5
English meaning
One who meditates on the supreme Person through this very syllable Om in its three-measure fullness becomes united with the radiant sun. As a snake is released from its slough, that person is freed from evil. The Saman chants lead to Brahmaloka, where the meditator sees the Person dwelling in the city of the body, higher than this elevated aggregate of living beings. The following two verses concern this.
Context
The full Om directed toward the supreme Person leads beyond the preceding two cases.
Explanation
The snake’s discarded skin depicts release from an earlier binding condition. Jivaghana is traditionally associated with the aggregate of living beings or Hiranyagarbha; seeing the Person beyond it connects attainment of Brahmaloka with final knowledge without simply making them identical.
Passage 5.6
English meaning
The three measures, when employed, remain subject to death. When they are joined to one another, not separated, and rightly applied in outward, inward, and intermediate activities, the knower does not tremble.
Context
The first concluding verse contrasts limited use of the measures with their integrated application.
Explanation
The contrast between subject to death and not trembling is essential: mere use of finite sound components does not automatically confer immortality. Traditional interpretation distinguishes isolated contemplation from integrated, knowledgeable use; outward, inward, and intermediate are sometimes related to waking, dream, and deep sleep.
English meaning
Through Rig verses one reaches this human world, through Yajur formulas the intermediate region, and through Saman chants that realm known to the seers. Using Om itself as the support, the discerning person reaches what is peaceful, unaging, immortal, fearless, and supreme.
Context
The second concluding verse gathers the Vedic pathways and returns to the supreme support.
Explanation
The realms in the first line are identified from the preceding passages, and its verb of attainment is implicit. The final five qualities distinguish the goal from ordinary pleasure or a heaven limited by time.
Context
The fifth question concerns sustained meditation on Om and its result.
