भयादस्याग्निस्तपति भयात्तपति सूर्यः । भयादिन्द्रश्च वायुश्च मृत्युर्धावति पञ्चमः ॥ ३ ॥

हिन्दी अर्थ
उसी के भय से अग्नि तपती है, उसी के भय से सूर्य तपता है। उसी के भय से इन्द्र और वायु, तथा पाँचवाँ मृत्यु, अपना कार्य करते दौड़ते हैं।
English meaning
From awe of it fire burns, and from awe of it the sun gives heat. From awe of it Indra and Vayu act, and Death runs as the fifth.
व्याख्या
अग्नि, सूर्य, इन्द्र, वायु और मृत्यु की पाँचवीं स्थिति गणना स्पष्ट करती है। स्वयं यम भी परम आधार के अधीन हैं; मृत्यु के शिक्षक को अन्तिम स्वतंत्र सत्ता नहीं माना गया है।
Explanation
Fire, sun, Indra and Vayu explain why Death is counted fifth. Even Yama belongs under the supreme ground, so the teacher of death is not presented as an absolutely independent power.
