यो योनिं योनिमधितिष्ठत्येको विश्वानि रूपाणि योनीश्च सर्वाः । ऋषिं प्रसूतं कपिलं यस्तमग्रे ज्ञानैर्बिभर्ति जायमानं च पश्येत् ॥ २ ॥

English meaning
The one who presides over each place of birth, every form, and all sources of generation sustains with knowledge the seer Kapila who arises at the beginning, and beholds him as he comes into being.
व्याख्या
कपिल को सांख्य के ऐतिहासिक प्रवर्तक का निश्चित उल्लेख मान लेना आवश्यक नहीं है। यह ऋषि का नाम अथवा वर्णसूचक विशेषण हो सकता है; कुछ व्याख्याएँ इसे हिरण्यगर्भ से जोड़ती हैं। स्पष्ट कथन इतना है कि सबसे आरम्भिक ज्ञाता भी परम अधिष्ठाता पर आश्रित है।
Explanation
Kapila need not be treated as an unambiguous historical reference to the founder of the Sāṃkhya school. It can function as a name or a colour epithet, and some interpretations associate the figure with Hiraṇyagarbha. The clear point is that even the earliest seer depends on the supreme presiding reality.
