Passage 2.11
English meaning
O prana, you are vratya, beyond initiation; you are Ekarshi, the sacrificial fire, the eater, and lord of all that exists. We are givers of the food you consume. O Matarishvan, you are our father.
Explanation
Vratya can ordinarily designate someone outside initiation. Here the commentary connects it with the native purity of the first-born prana, before whom there was no one to perform its initiation. Ekarshi is understood as the name of a fire in the Atharvan tradition. The verse thus praises prana’s independence prior to ritual rather than expressing social contempt.
Context
Unusual Vedic epithets present prana as the recipient of ritual and as a basis prior to ritual itself.
