प्लवा ह्येते अदृढा यज्ञरूपा अष्टादशोक्तमवरं येषु कर्म । एतच्छ्रेयो येऽभिनन्दन्ति मूढा जरामृत्युं ते पुनरेवापि यन्ति ॥ १.२.७ ॥

ये अठारह यज्ञ-साधन वास्तव में दुर्बल नावें हैं, जिन पर यह निम्न कर्म आधारित बताया गया है। जो मूढ़ इन्हीं को परम कल्याण मानकर प्रसन्न होते हैं, वे फिर जरा और मृत्यु को प्राप्त होते हैं।
English meaning
These eighteen constituents of sacrifice are indeed unsteady boats, supporting the action described as lower. Those who foolishly celebrate this as the highest good return once again to old age and death.
व्याख्या
अठारह को परम्परागत रूप से सोलह ऋत्विजों, यजमान और उसकी पत्नी के रूप में गिना जाता है; संख्या का यह विस्तार मन्त्र में स्वयं नहीं दिया गया है। नाव की आलोचना उपयोगिता के पूर्ण अभाव की नहीं, उसे जन्म-मृत्यु से पार उतारने वाला अंतिम साधन मानने की है।
Explanation
The eighteen are traditionally counted as sixteen officiants, the sacrificer and the sacrificer’s wife, although that enumeration is not supplied in the verse itself. The boat image questions their ability to carry one beyond repeated mortality, not every possible efficacy of ritual.
