Passage 5.1
English meaning
Two beautifully winged birds, companions joined together, embrace the same tree. One eats its sweet fig fruit; the other, without eating, watches.
Explanation
Eating provides an image for undergoing experience and the fruits of action, while watching without eating suggests an uninvolved witness. Identifying the birds with the individual self and the Lord is a familiar interpretation, but nondual and dualist traditions do not agree about their ultimate relationship.
Context
The third Mundaka opens with two birds sharing a tree; the following mantra develops the eater’s distress and the other bird’s greatness.
