विज्ञानं ब्रह्मेति व्यजानात् । विज्ञानाद्ध्येव खल्विमानि भूतानि जायन्ते । विज्ञानेन जातानि जीवन्ति । विज्ञानं प्रयन्त्यभिसंविशन्तीति । तद्विज्ञाय पुनरेव वरुणं पितरमुपससार । अधीहि भगवो ब्रह्मेति । तँ होवाच । तपसा ब्रह्म विजिज्ञासस्व । तपो ब्रह्मेति । स तपोऽतप्यत । स तपस्तप्त्वा ॥ १ ॥

आधुनिक हिन्दी में “विज्ञान” का प्रचलित अर्थ प्राकृतिक विज्ञान है, पर यहाँ वह अर्थ नहीं लेना चाहिए। पाठ बुद्धिगत पहचान को भी खोज का एक चरण बनाता है। पिता के पास फिर लौटने से स्पष्ट है कि स्पष्ट विचार या ज्ञान-संग्रह मात्र को अभी अंतिम उपलब्धि नहीं कहा गया है।
Explanation
The modern Hindi use of vijñān for natural science should not be read back into this passage. Intellectual discernment itself becomes a stage of the inquiry. The renewed return to the father shows that clear thought or accumulated knowledge has not yet been presented as its culmination.
