English meaning
For whoever knows in this way [the preceding fruit is stated]. [Brahman is contemplated] as “preservation” in speech, as “acquisition and preservation” in the life-breaths prāṇa and apāna, as “action” in the hands, as “movement” in the feet, and as “release” in the anus. These are the human designations. Now come the divine designations: “satisfaction” in rain and “strength” in lightning.
Explanation
The list offers a way to contemplate Brahman through familiar experiences of speech, breathing, action, movement, and nature rather than only as something remote. “Release” here concerns elimination, not an independent claim about spiritual liberation. Rain and lightning belong to the passage’s ancient divine correspondences, not a scientific account of weather.
Context
The opening words complete the preceding discussion of giving food. The passage then begins a list of contemplative designations located in bodily functions and natural powers.
