English meaning
One who knows in this way, having departed from this world, having entered this self made of food, having entered this self made of life-breath, having entered this self made of mind, having entered this self made of discerning understanding, and having entered this self made of bliss, moves through these worlds, eating as desired and taking forms as desired, singing this Sāman: “Hā-vu! Hā-vu! Hā-vu!”
Explanation
Upasaṅkramya conveys approaching or entering; translating it only as leaving behind or transcending would turn one interpretation into the text itself. Desired food and desired forms belong to the poetic description of spiritual freedom, not a promise of changing one’s body at will in ordinary life. “Hā-vu” consists of chant syllables rather than the words of an ordinary sentence.
Context
After the unity of person and sun, the text describes the movement of one who knows. Food, life-breath, mind, discerning understanding, and bliss recur in sequence, leading into the concluding chant.
