English meaning
“I am food, I am food, I am food. I am the eater of food, I am the eater of food, I am the eater of food. I am the maker of the verse, I am the maker of the verse, I am the maker of the verse. I am the firstborn of ṛta, the order of truth, earlier than the gods, the navel of immortality. Whoever gives me is the very one who preserves me. I am food; I eat the one who eats food. I have overcome the whole world. I am radiance like the heavenly light.” Whoever knows in this way [is such]. Thus ends the Upaniṣad.
Explanation
The voice of “I” is read here as the poetic expression of an encompassing unity, rather than the boasting of an everyday ego. The giver who preserves food and the food that eats its eater reverse ordinary roles to evoke nourishment, giving, and mortality. The “navel of immortality” is an image of a centre. The reading suvaḥ na jyotiḥ compares the speaker to heavenly or solar radiance; it need not mean golden light.
Context
This is the culmination of the Sāman announced in the preceding unit. The threefold declarations of food, its eater, and the maker of the verse gather together the vallī’s recurring themes of nourishment and knowledge.
