English meaning
For that reason its name is Idandra; Idandra is indeed its name. Though it is Idandra, people call it Indra indirectly, for the gods seem to delight in indirect expression, the gods seem to delight in indirect expression.
Explanation
Connecting Idandra with the preceding idam adarsham, “I have seen this,” is the Upanishad’s interpretive wordplay. It is not a demonstration of the name’s history by modern linguistic methods. Indirect expression makes divine naming a matter of suggestion and discovery rather than a merely straightforward label.
Context
The first chapter ends by linking the declaration of seeing with the name Indra through sound and wordplay. The final sentence is repeated in the source.
