Passage 4.3
English meaning
In this city of the body, the fires of vitality alone stay awake. Apana is the household fire, garhapatya, and vyana is the southern cooking fire, anvaharyapachana. Prana is the offering fire, ahavaniya, because it is brought forward from the garhapatya, as the ritual fire is.
Explanation
The city stands for the body and the fires for its vital powers. The ritual transfer from the household fire to the offering fire illuminates the relation of apana and prana; anvaharyapachana is also the southern fire. External sacrifice is thus recast as an internal process.
Context
The continuing vital functions of sleep are explained through three Vedic ritual fires.
