English meaning
He said: Gargya, just as all the rays of the setting sun become one in its luminous orb and spread out again when it rises, so all these faculties become one in the higher deity, mind. Then the person does not hear, see, smell, taste, touch, speak, take hold, enjoy sexual pleasure, discharge, or move about. People say that the person is asleep.
Explanation
The gathering of the sun’s rays is a visual analogy, not an astronomical claim. The ten suspended activities encompass perception and action. Vital processes such as breathing remain active in the next passage, so sleep is not described as total bodily inactivity.
Context
The first answer describes sensory and active faculties withdrawing into mind during sleep.
