English meaning
This Self is not attained by one lacking strength, through heedlessness, or through austerity lacking its proper mark. But for the discerning person who strives with the requisite means, this self enters the abode of Brahman.
Explanation
Lack of strength should not be turned into a judgment about physical disability or illness; Śaṅkara identifies the strength as spiritual vigour arising from steadfastness in the Self. Alingat is difficult and literally suggests lacking a requisite mark; Śaṅkara takes that mark as renunciation and tapas as knowledge, so bodily austerity alone is not an adequate interpretation.
Context
Immediately after the Self’s disclosure, the text insists on the seeker’s strength, attentiveness, and properly qualified discipline.
