English meaning
A verse has been spoken on this matter: this knowledge of Brahman should be taught only to those who perform the prescribed practices, are versed in the Veda, are established in Brahman, offer personally to the Ekarshi fire with faith, and have duly completed the head-vow.
Explanation
Ekarshi and the head-vow are concrete signs of an Atharvavedic ritual setting, so reducing them to generic metaphors would erase the teaching’s historical form. Śaṅkara associates the head-vow with bearing fire on the head; that historical explanation is not an instruction to attempt a fire practice today or a universal prohibition on readers accessing the text.
Context
At the close of the Upanishad, the description of release turns to the formal transmission of teaching and the qualifications expected of its recipients.
