English meaning
The presence set a blade of grass before him and said, “Burn this.” Agni approached it with all his force, but could not burn it. He returned from there and reported, “I could not discover what this mysterious presence is.”
Explanation
The smallness of the grass matters: failure cannot be explained simply by the unusual difficulty of the object. Agni reports not only an unsuccessful act but an inability to identify the visitor. The narrative moves from a limit in power to an admission of a limit in understanding.
Context
Agni’s sweeping claim is tested by a very small object and fails.
