तस्मिँस्त्वयि किं वीर्यमित्यपीदँ सर्वं दहेयं यदिदं पृथिव्यामिति ॥ ५ ॥

तस्मिन् त्वयि किम् वीर्यम् [अस्ति] इति [यक्षम् अपृच्छत्] । यत् इदम् पृथिव्याम् [अस्ति], इदम् सर्वम् अपि [अहम्] दहेयम् इति [अग्निः अब्रवीत्] ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
यक्ष ने पूछा, ऐसे तुममें क्या सामर्थ्य है? अग्नि ने कहा, पृथ्वी पर जो कुछ है, वह सब मैं जला सकता हूँ।
English meaning
The presence asked, “What power is there in you?” Agni replied, “I could burn all this, whatever is on the earth.”
व्याख्या
अग्नि का दावा दहन-शक्ति का है, ज्ञान का नहीं। सर्वम् की व्यापकता आगे रखे जाने वाले छोटे तिनके से तीखा विरोध बनाएगी। प्रश्न यह नहीं कि अग्नि सामान्यतः जलाते हैं या नहीं, बल्कि यह कि वे अपनी शक्ति के पूर्ण स्वतन्त्र स्वामी हैं या नहीं।
Explanation
Agni claims a power to burn, not yet a knowledge of the mysterious visitor. The breadth of “all” will contrast sharply with the small blade of grass used in the test. The issue is not whether fire ordinarily burns, but whether Agni possesses that power independently.
