Passage 3.2
English meaning
They thought, “This victory is ours alone, and this greatness is ours alone.” Brahman understood their thought and appeared before them. They did not recognize it and wondered, “What is this mysterious presence?”
Explanation
The repeated “ours alone” exposes the assumption of exclusive authorship. Yaksha here names a wondrous, mysterious presence whose identity the gods cannot establish. The story thus distinguishes having something immediately before oneself from actually understanding it.
Context
The gods’ pride in their victory is challenged by the appearance of an unrecognized yaksha.
