Passage 3.10
English meaning
The presence set a blade of grass before him and said, “Carry this away.” Vayu approached with all his force, but could not take it away. He returned from there and reported, “I could not discover what this mysterious presence is.”
Explanation
The same grass can neither be burned nor carried away. Repetition makes the shared dependence of distinct divine powers the point of the story. Exerting full force does not produce recognition, and Vayu too ends by acknowledging that he does not know.
Context
Vayu’s test uses the same object as Agni’s and produces the same result.
