Passage 1.8
English meaning
Through tapas Brahman unfolds in creative fullness, and from it food or sustaining matter arises. From that come vital life, mind, the real elements and the worlds, together with the enduring result associated with actions.
Explanation
The next passage calls tapas knowledge-filled, so bodily mortification alone is not an adequate reading here. Rendering satyam as elements and amritam as enduring karmic result follows a traditional interpretation; this relative persistence is not the deathlessness of liberation.
Context
After the analogies of emergence, the text gives a compressed sequence of manifestation.
