English meaning
The lower knowledge comprises the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda, together with phonetics, ritual procedure, grammar, etymological interpretation, metre and calendrical astronomy. The higher is that through which the Imperishable is understood.
Explanation
Even study of sacred texts is not automatically equated with the final understanding sought here. Akshara means the imperishable in this context; reducing it to a written letter would miss the inquiry into reality developed in the next passage.
Context
The distinction is made concrete through a list of four Vedas and six supporting disciplines.
