स ईक्षाञ्चक्रे । कस्मिन्नहमुत्क्रान्त उत्क्रान्तो भविष्यामि कस्मिन्वा प्रतिष्ठिते प्रतिष्ठास्यामीति ॥ ३ ॥

उसने विचार किया: किसके निकल जाने पर मैं निकल गया होऊँगा, और किसके स्थित रहने पर मैं स्थित रहूँगा?
English meaning
He considered: When what departs shall I have departed, and when what remains established shall I remain established?
व्याख्या
यह विचार प्राण को अनुभवित जीवन की केंद्रीय शर्त के रूप में सामने लाता है। दूसरे प्रश्न में इन्द्रियों पर उसकी प्रधानता दिखाई गई थी; यहाँ पुरुष उस प्रधान जीवन-शक्ति का भी स्रोत बनेगा, जिससे विचार-क्रम पूर्ण होता है।
Explanation
The reflection brings prana forward as a central condition of embodied life. The second question demonstrated its priority over the faculties; here the Person will become the source even of that vital power, completing the earlier line of inquiry.
