English meaning
Om, this syllable, is all this. Its explanation is: all that has been, is now, and will be is Om. Whatever lies beyond the three times is also Om.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
Om is not restricted here to a spoken sound. The text presents it as a sign of all existence in time and of what exceeds time. This is philosophical exposition, not a scientific claim about the physical effects of sound.
Passage 1.2
English meaning
All this is Brahman. This Self is Brahman. This Self has four quarters.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
The four quarters will be explained through waking, dreaming, deep sleep and the fourth. They should not be understood as four physical pieces of the Self.
Passage 1.3
English meaning
The second quarter is Taijasa: situated in dreaming, aware of inward objects, seven-limbed and nineteen-mouthed, experiencing subtle objects.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
Dream presents experience even without the immediate presence of an external object. Here its direction is inward; the next passage distinguishes it from deep sleep.
Passage 1.5
English meaning
Deep sleep is where a sleeper desires no object and sees no dream. Its experiencer, Prajna, is the third quarter: unified, a mass of awareness, full of bliss, enjoying bliss and serving as the doorway of consciousness.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
Dreamless sleep is not described merely as a total absence: the text also uses Prajna and bliss. Yet the fourth is subsequently distinguished from this condition.
Passage 1.6
English meaning
This is the lord of all, the knower of all, the inner ruler and the source of all; from this beings arise and into this they return.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
This description follows the preceding account of Prajna. Traditions explain the connection between individual deep sleep and the world's causal ground differently; read the claim in its textual setting.
Passage 1.7
English meaning
The fourth is neither inward awareness, outward awareness, awareness of both, a mass of awareness, ordinary cognition, nor non-cognition. It is unseen, beyond transactions, ungraspable, without distinguishing marks, unthinkable and indescribable. Its essence is recognition of the one Self; in it the manifold world subsides. Peaceful, auspicious and nondual, it is considered the fourth. That is the Self; that is to be known.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
This central passage teaches through successive negations. The fourth should not be equated with ordinary waking cognition, dreaming or simply deep sleep. Shiva is rendered here as auspicious without imposing a sectarian identification.
Passage 1.8
English meaning
Considered as a syllable, this Self is Om. Considered through its sound measures, its quarters are the measures and the measures are the quarters: A, U and M.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
The teaching shifts from quarters of experience to the sound measures of Om. A, U and M, together with the measureless fourth, form a contemplative and philosophical correspondence.
Passage 1.9
English meaning
Vaishvanara, situated in waking, is A, the first measure, through pervasiveness or being first. One who knows this obtains desired objects and becomes foremost.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
A, apti and adi are connected through sound and meaning. The promised result belongs to the text's contemplative teaching; we are not guaranteeing material success.
Passage 1.10
English meaning
Taijasa, situated in dreaming, is U, the second measure, through elevation or its intermediate position. One who knows this extends the continuity of knowledge and attains evenness; no one ignorant of Brahman is born in that person's lineage.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
U is related to elevation and intermediate position. The statement about one's lineage is the text's promise, not a factual prediction about any particular family.
Passage 1.11
English meaning
Prajna, situated in deep sleep, is M, the third measure, through measuring or dissolution. One who knows this measures or comprehends all this and becomes its place of dissolution.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
Measuring and dissolution both contribute to the account of M. The concise rendering preserves these associations without pretending to reproduce any commentary in full.
Passage 1.12
English meaning
The fourth is without a sound measure, beyond transactions, the subsiding of the manifold, auspicious and nondual. Thus Om is the Self itself. One who knows this enters the Self through the Self.
Context
The Mandukya teaching relates the four quarters of the Self to the measures of Om.
Explanation
The fourth is not merely one more audible sound. Entering the Self is language of realization rather than movement through physical space. Gaudapada's Karikas have not been included as part of the twelve-mantra Upanishad.
