Passage 1.9
English meaning
Know as Brahman that which is not grasped through the activity of vital breath, but through which vital breath is directed, not merely this object of worship.
Explanation
Vital breath is indispensable to life, yet the passage does not treat it as the ultimate independent ground. Prāṇiti concerns vital activity and is sometimes interpreted with reference to smelling. This rendering keeps the broader vital-breath sense rather than identifying Brahman with the physical movement of air.

Context
The first chapter’s parallel statements conclude with the basis of vital breath.
