यच्छ्रोत्रेण न शृणोति येन श्रोत्रमिदं श्रुतम् । तदेव ब्रह्म त्वं विद्धि नेदं यदिदमुपासते ॥ ८ ॥

हिन्दी अर्थ
जिसे कान से नहीं सुना जाता, किन्तु जिससे यह सुनने की शक्ति सम्भव होती है, उसी को ब्रह्म जानो; इस उपास्य वस्तु को नहीं।
English meaning
Know as Brahman what is not heard with the ear, but through which this faculty of hearing is made possible, not merely this object of worship.
व्याख्या
किसी ध्वनि को ब्रह्म का पूरा स्वरूप मान लेना और ध्वनि के बोध का आधार पहचानना अलग बातें हैं। श्रुतम् का वाक्य संक्षिप्त है; यहाँ आशय कान को ध्वनि के ग्रहण में समर्थ बनाने वाले आधार से लिया गया है।
Explanation
Taking a sound to exhaust Brahman is different from recognizing the ground of hearing a sound. The construction with śrutam is compressed; this rendering emphasizes the basis that makes auditory awareness possible rather than inventing an additional audible entity.
