Passage 1.6
English meaning
Know as Brahman that which cannot be made an object of thought, but through which, they say, the mind is known, not merely this object of worship.
Explanation
The mind can form a concept of Brahman, but the concept should not be confused with the ground of thinking. Matam is read here as known or illumined; other renderings emphasize the mind being enabled to think. Either way, the passage directs inquiry beyond mental representation.
Context
After speech, the same distinction is applied to the mind and its thoughts.
