English meaning
If one knows Brahman as non-existent, one becomes as though non-existent; if one knows that Brahman is, one is thereby known as existent. This is the embodied inner self of the preceding understanding-formed self. Now further questions arise: does anyone who does not know, on departing from here, reach that world? Or does one who knows, on departing, attain it? It desired: may I be many; may I come forth. It undertook concentrated creative effort. Having done so, it brought forth all this, whatever exists here. Having created it, it entered that very creation. Entering it, it became this and that, the formed and formless; the expressible and inexpressible; the based and baseless; the conscious and unconscious; truth and untruth. Whatever there is became the real; therefore it is called the real. A verse concerning this follows.
Explanation
Becoming as though non-existent is a philosophical claim about reality and self-understanding, not a denial of the human worth of people who disagree. Entry into creation means the originating reality is not simply left outside the world. The final real denotes the ground of opposites; it does not make dishonest statements truthful in ordinary conduct.
Context
After the bliss-formed self, questions arise about Brahman’s reality and what knowledge changes about attainment. The response unfolds through creation and the creator’s entry into it.
