English meaning
In this account, the being’s initial embryonic condition is in the man as seed. This is described as the vital essence gathered from all his limbs; he bears himself within himself. When he deposits it in the woman, he brings it to birth. This is called its first birth.
Context
The second chapter moves from cosmic creation to generations and a sequence of three births. Its language belongs to an ancient account of reproduction.
Explanation
Seed is described as the body’s gathered vigor, while the future child is treated as the father’s continuation. This links bodily succession with continuity of self. It is a historically male-centered model, not a reliable account of fertilization, genetics or embryology. Translating it preserves the historical viewpoint without validating it as modern biology.
Passage 4.2
English meaning
It becomes part of the woman’s own being, like one of her own limbs. For that reason, the account says, it does not harm her. She nurtures this embodiment of his self that has come into her.
Context
After the first birth, the passage describes gestation and nurture within the woman. The next passage states that the nourisher herself needs care.
Explanation
Atmabhuyam expresses incorporation into one’s own being and the intimacy of an own limb. “Does not harm her” must not become a medical assurance that pregnancy is free of danger. It is an explanation within the ancient narrative; actual pregnancy risks and care are separate medical matters.
Passage 4.3
English meaning
The woman who nurtures must herself be nurtured and cared for. She carries the embryo. The father tends the child from the beginning of its birth. In tending the child he tends his own continuation; through this succession the worlds continue. This is its second birth.
Context
This passage links carrying the embryo with caring for the child and names the second birth. Bhavayitri and bhavayitavya use the same root to express reciprocal nurture.
Explanation
The mother is not presented only as a means of nourishment: care for the person who nurtures is explicitly required. The child is then linked with the father’s continuation and the succession of worlds. The phrasing janmano agre adhi permits interpretive discussion about care before and after birth or from immediately after birth; this rendering conservatively emphasizes care from the beginning.
Passage 4.4
English meaning
This embodiment of his self, the son, is set in his place to carry on meritorious deeds. His other self, the father, having fulfilled his tasks and reached old age, departs. Departing from here, he is born again. This is his third birth.
Context
The count of three births is completed through succession, aging, death and rebirth. Vamadeva’s knowledge will then be placed alongside this cycle.
Explanation
Atman here also serves the language of continuity between father and son, so imposing one undifferentiated philosophical definition on every occurrence would obscure the passage. Succession in meritorious work belongs to its historical social and religious framework. Rebirth is a religious assertion of the text, not a modern empirically established claim.
English meaning
The seer spoke of this: while still in the womb I came to know all these births of the gods. A hundred iron strongholds enclosed me; then, like a hawk, I flew out with force. Vamadeva said this while still lying in the womb.
Context
This prose unit embeds a verse identified as Rigveda 4.27.1. After the account of three births, knowledge and an image of release from confinement enter the argument.
Explanation
Iron strongholds vividly represent enclosure, while the hawk’s flight provides an image of breaking free. The Upanishad attributes the declaration to Vamadeva’s knowledge in the womb. This should be read as religious and poetic language of knowledge and release, not as evidence about modern fetal cognition or a literal instruction for bodily escape.
Passage 4.6
English meaning
Knowing in this way, he rose beyond the dissolution of this body and, attaining all that was desired in that heavenly world, became deathless, became deathless.
Context
This closes the second chapter by stating the result of knowledge. Deathlessness follows Vamadeva’s insight, and the closing formula will return in the final chapter.
Explanation
By placing bodily dissolution beside deathlessness, the text does not simply promise that an ordinary body will never die. Heaven and the fulfillment of desires express the religious fruit of knowledge. The repetition of samabhavat strengthens the closure and is preserved rather than treated as an accidental duplication.
