English meaning
The newly created deities fell into this vast ocean. The creator subjected that person to hunger and thirst. The deities said to it: find us a dwelling in which we can become established and eat food.
Context
The divine powers of creation now need a stable dwelling and nourishment. Their need begins the search for an embodied home.
Explanation
The powers are not portrayed as self-sufficient: dwelling and food are conditions of their coordinated activity. The referent of tam and the meaning of the ocean require interpretation; this rendering takes tam as the previously formed person. The continuation connects the faculties with hunger and thirst within a common embodiment.
English meaning
It brought them a cow. They said: this is not sufficient for us. It brought them a horse. They said: this too is not sufficient for us.
Context
The deities test possible dwellings. The cow and horse precede the acceptance of the human form in the next passage.
Explanation
The repeated alam makes adequacy the criterion: the powers seek a suitable basis for their shared activity. The story is oriented toward human experience. It does not establish a modern conclusion about animal consciousness or the moral worth of nonhuman life.
English meaning
It brought them the human form. They exclaimed: how well made! The person is indeed well fashioned. It told them: enter, each according to its proper dwelling.
Context
This is the decisive moment in the selection of a body. The following passage assigns each deity a particular place and function.
Explanation
Sukritam here praises something as well made, rather than simply naming moral merit. Yathayatanam makes the entry ordered: different powers will operate through such distinct places as mouth, eyes and heart. The passage prepares a model of differentiated functions within one integrated body.
English meaning
Fire became speech and entered the mouth; wind became breath and entered the nostrils; the sun became sight and entered the eyes; the directions became hearing and entered the ears; herbs and trees became hairs and entered the skin; the moon became mind and entered the heart; death became apana and entered the navel; waters became seed and entered the generative organ.
Context
The entry sequence revisits the organ–faculty–divinity correspondences from the first section, now as functions established in a body.
Explanation
The earlier account moved from organs to faculties and deities; here the deities become faculties and enter organs. Together the two directions present a correspondence between body and world. Bhutva, becoming, matters: treating fire as a literal flame stored in the mouth would miss the mode of relation the narrative constructs.
Passage 2.5
English meaning
Hunger and thirst said to it: make provision for us two as well. It answered: I assign you a place among these very deities and make you sharers in them. Thus, whichever deity receives an offering, hunger and thirst have a share in it.
Context
After the divine powers find their dwellings, hunger and thirst receive their place. This closes the second section and leads to the creation of food.
Explanation
Hunger and thirst are not assigned one more isolated organ; they share in all the powers that are nourished. The reference to an offering joins embodied nourishment to sacrificial language. The narrative makes hunger a pervasive condition of bodily life, not simply a fault to condemn or an obstacle to ignore.
