English meaning
At the beginning, all this was the Self alone. Nothing else blinked or stirred as a living presence. It considered: let me now bring forth worlds.
Context
The Upanishad begins its creation account with the Self. Worlds, their presiding powers and a body are introduced in sequence.
Explanation
The verb ikshata, looked or considered, connects creation with awareness. Eka eva stresses that no second originating principle has yet been introduced. Mishat evokes blinking, so the scene has no other living activity. This is the text’s philosophical creation narrative, not a proposed scientific chronology of the universe.
Passage 1.2
English meaning
It brought forth these worlds: Ambhas, the Rays, Mara and the Waters. Ambhas is beyond heaven, with heaven as its support; the intermediate region is the Rays; earth is Mara; and what lies below is the Waters.
Context
After the first intention, creation is arranged into four named regions. The passage itself explains their locations.
Explanation
The arrangement links an upper realm, an intermediate region, earth and waters below within a Vedic cosmological picture. Mara suggests a relation between earth and mortality, while marichi evokes rays. Identifying these names with particular modern planets or physical layers would go beyond what the passage establishes.
Passage 1.3
English meaning
It considered: here are the worlds; now let me bring forth their guardians. From the waters it raised a person and fashioned that form.
Context
With the worlds established, the account turns to their guardians. The person now formed becomes the meeting point of bodily faculties and cosmic powers.
Explanation
The person drawn from water provides the setting in which organs and their divine counterparts will emerge. Purusha therefore works here as a cosmic bodily figure, not merely as an ordinary social category. The forming action describes consolidation within the narrative rather than a biological mechanism.
English meaning
It heated that person. As it was heated, the mouth opened like an egg: from the mouth came speech, and from speech fire. The nostrils opened: from them came breath, and from breath wind. The eyes opened: from them sight, and from sight the sun. The ears opened: from them hearing, and from hearing the directions. Skin opened: from skin hairs, and from hairs herbs and trees. The heart opened: from it mind, and from mind the moon. The navel opened: from it apana, and from apana death. The generative organ opened: from it seed, and from seed waters.
Context
This extended passage closes the first section. Its eight organ–faculty–divinity correspondences return as an entry into the body in the next section.
Explanation
Bodily openings and faculties are paired with fire, wind, sun and other cosmic powers. Heating expresses the intensity of formation and emergence within the story. Prana and apana belong to the text’s account of vital powers; they should not be mapped without qualification onto a single modern anatomical structure or physiological process.
