English meaning
The woman who nurtures must herself be nurtured and cared for. She carries the embryo. The father tends the child from the beginning of its birth. In tending the child he tends his own continuation; through this succession the worlds continue. This is its second birth.
Explanation
The mother is not presented only as a means of nourishment: care for the person who nurtures is explicitly required. The child is then linked with the father’s continuation and the succession of worlds. The phrasing janmano agre adhi permits interpretive discussion about care before and after birth or from immediately after birth; this rendering conservatively emphasizes care from the beginning.
Context
This passage links carrying the embryo with caring for the child and names the second birth. Bhavayitri and bhavayitavya use the same root to express reciprocal nurture.
