English meaning
The seer spoke of this: while still in the womb I came to know all these births of the gods. A hundred iron strongholds enclosed me; then, like a hawk, I flew out with force. Vamadeva said this while still lying in the womb.
Explanation
Iron strongholds vividly represent enclosure, while the hawk’s flight provides an image of breaking free. The Upanishad attributes the declaration to Vamadeva’s knowledge in the womb. This should be read as religious and poetic language of knowledge and release, not as evidence about modern fetal cognition or a literal instruction for bodily escape.
Context
This prose unit embeds a verse identified as Rigveda 4.27.1. After the account of three births, knowledge and an image of release from confinement enter the argument.
