English meaning
This heart and this mind: recognition, commanding awareness, discriminating knowledge, conscious understanding, retentive intelligence, vision, steadiness, thought, insight, impulse, memory, intention, resolve, vitality, desire and mastery are all names of prajnana, awareness.
Explanation
The list includes not only reasoning or information but also desire, memory, steadiness and vitality. Reducing prajnana to testable intelligence or intellectual skill would therefore be too narrow. The boundaries between the Sanskrit terms do not simply match modern psychological categories; the Hindi and English glosses indicate senses rather than definitive technical definitions.
Context
In response to the preceding inquiry, the passage lists mental and vital activities. It then calls them different names of prajnana.
